Here in Stucel, we use email and instant message extensively to communicate with clients and colleagues. By working virtually i.e not face to face, clear communication is the most important thing to get it right. We all know, it’s a different thing to explain something through written if compared to live meet up. For on site meeting, body language, face expression, and voice tone will help. If sloppy, we could have been write something “offensive” to certain people in email. Especially with people who cash us to work on their project. For example if we are in the middle of the project, I used to send project progress (less than half done) to client, although it may look very raw. I bring the iPad on the first meeting with new important client. Being a project manager, one will meet types of clients, some are easy, some are not. I found that understanding (guessing) what client doesn’t like, is the most difficult thing. Especially when they can not address constructive opinion, he/she who prefer “I don’t like it, and I don’t know why I don’t”. If lucky, is to meet a client that has already identified his/her needs, and would always ready to have an effective discussion with you, but the chance to meet this ‘more human’ client is slim. I always agree with the quote “customers will always be the king”, no matter what. It has been three years, and being this “middle” position between client & our designer & programmer is still far from easy.
