As we all know (and rumored before), Apple announced a new line of portable computers during Steve Jobs' keynote speech at Macworld 2008 held at San Francisco's Moscone Center recently, the MacBook Air.

The new machines feature a multi-touch trackpad, allowing the user to double-tap and move. Rotate a photo by pivoting your index finger around your thumb, as well as pinch & zoom. This new product is a complement to the existing MacBook and MacBook Pro lines.

With 0.16" to 0.76", it's claimed as "the world's thinnest notebook", it fits the Manilla envelope as advertised (and joked). It's thinner than the thinnest part of a Sony TZ series laptop.

Their matte black huge banner at Macworld expo:

When I first hear their banner tagline, I'm assuming that it will be another Nike and Apple collaborative project, since my top level of mind after reading the word "air" after product name is something related to:

But I was wrong! It's not related with Nike or any other shoe company. But, after I saw the MacBook Air, those curvy dish alike on its bottom case reminds me of:

What's with the "air" word? Steve Jobs explains that this MacBook won't have firewire, only 1 USB port and no optical drive, that's why it's called Air, since everything will be done in the air (accessing other Mac's disc drive).

My MacBook also runs wirelessly and often shares files on [the] air. So my and other people's Wi-Fi capable notebooks are also "air" too I guess :)

I still don't really get the related core concept behind it at the first place. Does it fly? (since the shape already looks like a UFO flying saucer). Is it some kind of an airline? At first, the rumors were saying that this notebook will have on screen keyboard instead of real physical keyboard (like a big widescreen iPhone). That's surely "Air" because people will use it while standing or walking and hold it in their arms.

So, I guess Apple forcing trying to extend the word Air into thin, light weight, and metaphore it into their MacBook Air. Although it's quite thin and light weight, I have no comment with these downsides of MacBook Air, but what I'm concerning the most is its "AIR" word branding.
